FLOWERS WEEK – May 20, 2017

FLOWERS WEEK brought out the gardener and floriculturist in all of us! Every wall, shelf, bulletin board, and bookcase was covered with the most beautiful hand made blooms! From sunflowers hand painted with added sunflower seeds and yarn-spun tulips, to bottle cap printed hyacinths and marshmallow stamped daisies, our classrooms were blossoming with some of our most artistic creations of nature! Several of our books like "From Bulb to Tulip", "That's Not A Daffodil", "Flowers", and "Ava's Poppy" showed detailed photos of real life flowers or colorful illustrations of some of the most popular flowers we so often see. The varieties are endless and the colors are just so vivid and eye-catching! Through some of this week's literature, we learned the parts of a flower and about the care it takes to help flowers grow. Many of us talked about our own gardening traditions at home and how proud we [...]

April 1st, 2017 – SPRING WEEK!!

SPRING WEEK though a bit soggy and chilly outside, was warm and cheery inside our classrooms! Spring has arrived and brought all of the clouds and rain with it! Soon the beauty of spring will be all around us; green grass, bright flowers, warm sun, birds chirping, and children playing outside! Yay! We brainstormed about all of the upcoming activities we will do in the fabulous weather to come. Some of our favorites included riding bikes, flying kites, going to the park, playing soccer and baseball, and having picnics. Sounds like a fun-filled season is upon us! We read "When Spring Comes", "Spring Things", "Surprising Spring", "Splish Splash Spring", and many others. Each of these books discussed the changes occurring this time of year and all the beauty that follows. During creative art, we used bundled q-tips and paint to make life-like cherry blossom trees. Adding scent to our flowers, [...]

March 25th, 2017 – BIRDS WEEK!!

Throughout BIRDS WEEK, we have spread our wings and taken flight, encountering many feathered friends along the way! From peacocks, flamingos, and parrots to ducks and robins (all our favorites, of course!), we have gathered up endless information about birds of all kinds. We learned that robins lay blue eggs and although a toucan's beak appears to be heavy, it is actually as light as a feather! Who knew? Books such as "Little Home Bird", "Beaks", "Birds", and "Don't Let The Pigeon Drive The Bus" showed us vivid pictures/details of many bird species. We are now able to identify quite a few of them! As our Pre K continues their search for sight words, they used this week's books to see who could find more. They are excited to read each word aloud as they find it! The smiles on their faces are just beaming with pride and that "I [...]

March 18th, 2017 – ST. PATRICK’S DAY WEEK!!

ST. PATRICK'S DAY WEEK had our Irish eyes smiling! We learned all about St. Patrick, Ireland, shamrocks, and the pesky little leprechaun man :). While the big snow storm put a damper on the roads, we loved our snow day, did our own little weather predictions, and made our own rainbows by the pot of gold. A little snow was not going to put a damper on our fun and learning!! This week we learned so many fun facts! Did you know that rainbows are actually round and we cannot see the bottom half because of the horizon, that the national color of Ireland is green because of all the beautiful scenery or that the people in Ireland eat corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, carrots, and Irish soda bread on St. Patrick's Day! Although, some of us aren't Irish we honored the holiday by listening to Celtic music the whole week [...]

March 11th, 2017 – REPTILES/AMPHIBIANS WEEK!!

REPTILES/AMPHIBIANS WEEK focused on these superb creatures and all their slithering, scaly, slimy, and spectacular characteristics. From lizards, chameleons, geckos and snakes to turtles, alligators, and crocodiles...we had our herpetologist thinking caps on and were ready to conquer this long list! We explored their habitats and the numerous details about each of them that make them so unique. Did you know there are over 7,000 different kinds of reptiles? We were amazed at the ones we learned about in the books we read! A fun fact about geckos is they have suction cups on their hands to help them climb. We made geckos just like the ones we learned about, adding each detail we could recall. We were wow'd by the fact that snakes grow out of their skin and shed it. And would you believe their ears are on the inside, not outside like ours? Some of us used [...]

March 4th, 2017 – DR. SEUSS WEEK!!

DR. SEUSS WEEK was just plain wacky! While wearing our crazy socks, showing off our crazy hairstyles, turning our clothes inside out, and modeling our crazy hats, we were sporting our silliest looks here at school! We spent much of our time reading all of our favorite Dr. Seuss books. Each tongue-twisting, playful tale had our imaginations running wild! Oh, Dr. Seuss could surely make us laugh and wonder! "Green Eggs And Ham" was a favorite of ours. Some of our friends used a marble painting technique to create green eggs. Others used paint and paper to make the most delicious eggs and ham! "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" had us diving into the deep! We found all types of fish "swimming" in our sensory tables. Our hands were turned into fish to create those brightly colored characters. Some of us used tissue paper, glue, paint, and [...]
