November 8, 2016 – Election Day!

On Election Day, some of our classes learned about what it means to vote, what a ballot is, and what candidates are. They discussed the importance of voting and letting your voice be heard in a respectful way and gained an understanding of what a privilege it is to be able to cast your vote. The candidates in our Pre K room were chosen by the children. Mr. Snake and Cinderella were the top candidates and the voting began!. When the children returned to school the next day, they learned that Mr. Snake had won the election! They truly enjoyed this exercise, and the manner in which it was presented, allowed these very young children to understand a very grown up concept.

November 5, 2016 – LEAVES / TREES WEEK!

LEAVES/TREES WEEK had us whirling and twirling with songs and finger plays throughout the week! Bringing the outside in was the best part! We collected leaves, acorns, rocks, and sticks and used them at our sensory tables, as manipulatives during math, and to give our art projects that real-nature extra pop! We read "Ruby's Falling Leaves", "Autumn Leaves","Leaf Trouble", and "Why Do Leaves Change Color". We were able to see magnified pictures that revealed each leaf's details and beauty. We talked about the different types of leaves and identified the trees from which they come. Art involving nature was something we truly enjoyed! We created leaf rubbings and the amazement on our faces when we slowly saw the leaves appear, was just spectacular! We made wreathes with the leaves we had hand picked off of the ground and displayed them in our classrooms. Oh, the beautiful trees we painted were [...]

October 29, 2016 – HALLOWEEN WEEK!!

HALLOWEEN WEEK full of spooky fun was surely an exciting week! We decorated our "haunted house" (aka our school) with creepy crawling spiders and bats made from our handprints, candy corn using paint and tissue paper, mummies, monsters, jack-o-lanterns, and more! We even became mummies ourselves while our friends wrapped us up! The fun part was breaking out of the wrap! Our favorite sensory activity was working with our carved pumpkins! We couldn't wait to get our hands inside them and get messy! We pulled out the pulp and seeds. Some of us didn't like the texture and smell! Later, we used the seeds in math activities, like counting by 10's. Our Pre K pumpkin had 440 seeds!! Other sensory activities included neon slime bags and bins to squeeze, shape, and shake AND fall sensory bins with leaves and hidden creepy critters! And what could be better than Pajama Day?! [...]

October 22, 2016 – FALL WEEK!

FALL WEEK with its beautiful and vibrant colors had us all bright and cheery! We learned about all the "magic" that takes place during the autumn months and why these changes happen. While reading "A Tree For All Seasons", we discussed the changes that trees undergo throughout the seasons, focusing on why leaves change colors and "fall" all around us. We made our own fall foliage using foil and paint...Oh, the colors were wonderful! The book " How Many Seeds In A Pumpkin" was full of information we never knew about, like how the number of seeds in a pumpkin is determined by the number of lines on the outside of a pumpkin! Who knew?! Did you know that the longer a pumpkin is on the vine, the deeper the color is when picked? Ask us to share some more fall facts with you! We created fall wreaths out of [...]

October 15, 2016 – FIRE SAFETY WEEK

FIRE SAFETY WEEK has us aware and prepared! We discussed many safety procedures for fire prevention and safety. We practiced "stop, drop, and roll" which we learned was important to do if our clothes ever caught on fire. We talked about the importance of having fire extinguishers, fire alarms, smoke detectors, and emergency exits in our homes, at school, and in any building. We even went on a hunt in our school to find and count them all! Boy, did we find them quickly! We read books like " A Day In The Life of A Fireman" which taught us about all the things that go on before, during, and after a fire alarm goes off. We also got a closer look at the firemen's equipment and clothing that they wear to stay safe in a fire. We saw pictures of the parts of a fire truck and the many [...]
